Are you aware that Americans are spending 34% of their income on housing each month? If you’re already spending more than you’d prefer, the last thing you want to deal with is repairs to your pool. After all, a well-maintained pool can be a great asset to your property  and the perfect backyard summer retreat.

When the cold weather rolls into town, commit to the right winter preparation to keep your pool in good shape. Read on to learn about the 5 winter pool maintenance tips for homeowners!

1. Store Equipment Before Winter

When it comes to swimming pool maintenance, your first step should be to remove all equipment and place it in a secure spot for the winter. These items may include ladders and steps. If you don’t store them, they could sustain tears and damage from winter weather or the chemicals you’ll add to your pool.

2. Clean Out Your Swimming Pool

Next, spend time cleaning your pool. Remove leaves or other dirt that’s visible at the bottom of the pool using a pool vacuum. And skim the surface of your pool, as well, to minimize the potential for algae.

If you lack the proper equipment to clean your pool well, turn to professional pool maintenance technicians. They’ll be able to clean debris and help you get the right water chemistry.

3. Address the Pool Water

Lower the water level to a depth of one foot under the skimmer. You don’t want to drain your pool of all water, even if you are in a colder climate. That’s because dry winter air can wreak havoc on your pool’s liner, creating cracks and tears.

You’ll also want to change the water chemistry to ensure the chlorine and calcium hardness levels are in good shape. Aim to balance the pH level and alkalinity, as well, to avoid corrosion or murky water. Aim for a higher pH level since it will go down as the winter months progress.

4. Remove and Drain the Equipment

As part of your winter preparation, drain your pumps, heater, and filters. Clean the filters and take them out of your pool, too.

If you don’t drain equipment, the water can expand and cause cracks. In addition, dry off your pool cover. In doing so, you’ll prevent any moisture on it from freezing and eventually finding its way back into your pool in the spring.

5. Treat and Cover the Pool

Before you cover your pool for the winter, treat it with an algaecide. The last thing you want to see in the spring is algae floating on your water when you remove the cover. Make sure you give the algaecide at least a day to move through the pool, too.

Additionally, adding chlorine to your pool will ensure that the water is clean. As with the algaecide, make sure you distribute it throughout the entire body of water.

Invest in Winter Pool Maintenance

Winter pool maintenance is critical if you want your pool to avoid cracks and bacteria growth. Remove and drain equipment, and clean debris from your pool. Adjust the water’s chemistry before covering your pool to keep the water clean.
